Growing Together Beyond Books
At Nagarjun Learning Center, education goes far beyond the classroom. We believe that picnics, excursions, sports and creative activities are essential for a child's holistic development. These experiences teach teamwork, build confidence and create cherished memories that last a lifetime.
Children's Picnic to Pokhara Hilltop
The children of Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum village had never been on a picnic before. So we loaded everyone into the Learning Center's pickup truck and headed up the winding mountain road to Pokhara village — the hilltop above the Learning Center.
The smaller children rode in the cabin with Samjhana and the driver, while the older kids piled into the back of the truck. The drive took us through a beautiful rhododendron forest, with Nepal's national flower blooming all around us in vivid red. It was a bumpy, adventurous ride — but the excitement on every face made it worth it.
At the top, we were rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Ganesh Himalayan Range. The children played, shared food, laughed and explored the hilltop together. For many of them, it was the first time seeing their own mountains from such a vantage point. It was a day of pure joy — a reminder that sometimes the simplest adventures create the most powerful memories.
Physiotherapy Programme
In May 2022, NLC organized a physiotherapy and physical therapy programme for women and elderly in Saldum village. Volunteer physiotherapists provided hands-on treatment, pain management and body therapy sessions to villagers suffering from chronic pain due to years of heavy manual labor in the mountains.
The programme reached over 50 women and elderly community members, many of whom had never received any form of professional physical therapy before. Sessions included massage therapy, stretching exercises and guidance on daily practices to reduce pain and improve mobility.
Cultural Exchange & Community Bonding
NLC regularly hosts cultural exchange programmes where international volunteers immerse themselves in Nepali village life. From sharing traditional Dal Bhat meals with host families to participating in welcome ceremonies with marigold garlands, these exchanges build deep connections between volunteers and the communities they serve.
Volunteers explore local neighborhoods, learn about daily life in Nepal, and form lasting bonds with the families of Saldum and Kathmandu. These experiences enrich both the volunteers and the communities, fostering mutual understanding and friendship across cultures.
Nature Excursions & Rural Life
The mountains around Saldum and Dhading offer breathtaking natural beauty that NLC uses as a living classroom. Children and volunteers trek through mountain trails, explore the terraced hillsides, and learn about the natural heritage of the Himalayas.
These excursions also highlight the daily realities of rural Nepali life — women carrying heavy loads on mountain paths, washing clothes in crystal-clear streams, and farming on steep terraced fields. Understanding these hardships motivates our mission to bring education, healthcare and opportunity to these remote communities.
Women's Group Sessions
NLC organizes regular group sessions for women and children in the community. These informal gatherings bring together women of all ages to share experiences, learn new skills, and support each other. Volunteer facilitators lead interactive sessions that cover topics from health awareness to creative activities.
These sessions have become a cornerstone of NLC's community outreach, creating safe spaces where women can speak openly, learn together, and build lasting friendships.
